BALKOZAR ADAM, M.D., is a child and adolescent psychiatrist with decades of experience working with children, adolescents and their families. She is board certified in both Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Adam is a member of the APA Council on Children, Adolescence and their Families and a member of the AACAP Diversity and Culture Committee. Dr. Adam is a professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Adam is a member of the International Center for Psychological Trauma. She attended Cairo University Medical School.

The author will discuss mental health prevalence in the Refugee population and how to use the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s Practice Parameters for Cultural Competence in Child Psychiatry practice to help clinicians identify barriers to care, and to identify what clinicians can do to overcome those obstacles. She will explore the benefits of the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation and Cultural Formulation Interview in improving the overall mental health treatment of Muslim Refugee patients.
